Like most games played in casinos, Video poker has its own set of slang and commonVideo Poker Terms Slang and Glossary terms. To help you learn more about the game or to find the meaning of a word or phrase you may have heard, I have put together the following Video Poker Glossary of Terms.

Bank Of Video Poker Machines - A row or collection of video poker machines grouped together. Exactly like a bank of slot machines. The machines are not necessarily linked together like a multi machine progressive jackpot, just sitting next to each other.

Bankroll - The entire amount a player has to wager with. This is not the amount a player brings to play usually.

Bonus Video Poker - Bonus Poker is a variation of the popular Jacks or Better video poker game which incorporates a bonus into the pay table.

Cash Back - Some casinos offer a cash back incentive to video poker players who belong to the slots club based on the amount of money they wager.

Cash Out Button - The button found on a video poker machine that immediately cashes out the players remaining money, usually as a printed ticket that can be exchanged for cash at the cashiers cage.

Change Person / Slot Attendant - A casino employee who oversees the video poker and slots area, refilling machines or making change for players.

Coin In - The total amount of money wagered through a video poker machine in a session. This figure is used for cash back and other incentives for the slot club comps.

Complete Hand / Set Hand - A hand that is already as good as it can be, so there is no reason to draw any new cards.

Comps - Rewards given to players who reach certain playing levels in a slot club. Can include cash back, free rooms, free meals, free air fare and other prizes.

Credit - The amount clearly displayed on the video poker machine of the money a player has left to wager.

Deuces Wild - One of the most popular variations of video poker. All of the 2's are wild.

Discard - The cards a player does not keep out of the first set of cards dealt. Also the name on the buttons on some video poker machines a player presses to signify which cards to discard.

Drawing Hand - A video poker hand that must improve on the draw in order to win an amount on the pay table.

Expected Return - The amount, usually expressed as a percentage, that a player will win or lose playing a particular video poker machine based on the amount of money they wager and the house edge percentage

Flat Top Machine - A name used for many video poker machines that originally came from the tops of the machines being flat. Also used to describe video poker machines that do not have a progressive jackpot.

Full Pay Video Poker Machine - A video poker machine that has the highest available pay table. For example, a 9/6 Jacks or Better machine is a full pay machine.

Garbage Hand - A starting hand of no value and has no hopes to improve. A garbage hand is entirely discarded.

Hold Button - The buttons, usually directly under the cards displayed on the screen, either on the screen or under the screen on the machine, used to tell it which cards to hold.

House Edge - The percentage of the mathematical advantage the casino holds over the player.

Joker Poker - One of the many variations of Jacks or Better video poker. Joker Poker uses a 53 card playing deck with a single Joker, which acts as a wild card.

Kicker - A card that does not work with the rest of the hand. For example, a pair of Kings with a Jack kicker.

Maximum Credits - The button on most video poker machines used to bet the maximum amount of credits, usually 5, per spin.

Odds -  The chances of a certain thing happening, like the chance to hit a flush when drawing one card with four suited cards, based on the mathematical expectation.

Payback - The amount a video poker machine will pay back over the long run. Computed based on the return percentage of the machine and proper strategy.

Pay Table - The posted schedule of return for each hand on a video poker machine. For example, on a Jacks or Better video poker machine, a pair of Jacks pays 1 to 1.

Progressive Jackpot - A jackpot amount awarded for the top possible hand on the video poker machine, usually a royal flush. The progressive jackpot builds as players play, then resets to a lower amount when it is won.

Random Number Generator / RNG - A device, usually a computer chip, in a video poker game that simulates a deck of playing cards.

Short Pay Machine - A short pay video poker game is one where the pay table is not the best available one. For example, an 8 / 5 Jacks or Better machine is a short pay as 9 / 6 is a full pay machine.

Slot Club - A system that rewards video poker and slots players for their play at a casino. Also used to keep players coming back to play more. Rewards vary from casino to casino, with rewards ranging from cash back to free rooms and meals.

Wild Cards - A card that can substitute for any other card in the deck. The two most common wild cards on video poker machines are Jokers and in some games 2's.
